Oshá Sustainable Harvest
Ligusticum porteri
Oshá, or Bear Root, is a medicinal plant that grows at high elevations in the Rocky Mountains. The fragrant roots are an important wild-harvested, traditional medicine for many Native Americans and Hispanic people of the region.

To understand the amount of oshá available for harvest, we conducted roadside surveys to map oshá populations and estimate the amount of harvestable root in the population. You can read more about our work in "Mapping oshá (LIgusticum porteri) populations for a sustainable harvest plan for Colorado National Forests."
Working with the Kelly Kindscher and the Rio Grande National Forest, we are creating a sustainable harvest plan to ensure the longevity of oshá populations.

In a complementary project, we have begun inventorying the culturally important plants, used for food and medicine, found in our oshá populations.
