Oshá, or Bear Root, is a medicinal plant that grows at high elevations in the Rocky Mountains. The fragrant roots are an important wild-harvested, traditional medicine for many Native Americans and Hispanic people of the region.

To understand the amount of osha available for harvest, we conducted roadside surveys to map Oshá populations and estimate the amount of harvestable root in the population.

Working with the Kansas Biological Survey & Center for Ecological Research and the National Forest Service, we are creating a sustainable harvest plan to ensure the longevity of Oshá populations.
